 Preliminary

 

1. Short title, extent and commencement.

(1) This Act may be called the Customs Act, 1962.

(2) It extends to the whole[1] of India[2] [i][, fishing and fishing related activities by Indian-flagged fishing vessels beyond territorial waters of India]  [3][and, save as otherwise provided in this Act, it applies also to any offence or contravention thereunder committed outside India by any person.]

(3) It shall come into force on such date [4]as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

[2] The Customs Act, 1962 and Customs Tariff Act, 1975 has been extended to the whole of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf of India for certain purposes by Ministry of External Affairs N SO No. 189(E), dated 7-2-2002.
